The United States of America is yours and mine and should function in such a way as to impel and support us all as we strive to make our way within it. This is the purpose of reflectionandreform.com, to repair and reconstruct the conversation, previously stymied by terrorism and brutality, which would have made obvious the many ways de facto and de jure policies and practices maintained by both the American government and the American citizenry deliberately and consistently barred Black people access to opportunity. This country has handed out land ownership, home ownership, quality education, entire enterprises and equal protection under the law to citizens not Black and Brown regularly and consistently, as a matter of course. And as well, decided from on high that “no Black people have any rights that any white man is bound to respect.” (Chief Justice Roger B. Taney re Dred Scott v. Sandford Supreme Court Decision, 1857.) The damage done has been catastrophic to the communities deliberately prejudiced by such an extensive and coordinated campaign of oppression.
America has a very big race problem. It is not pretty and it is not pleasant, especially for those who have been systematically marginalized because of race. In fact, it is incredibly painful. But I conjecture that what will heal this pain is to develop the lexicon to confront all that has happened to Black people in America, including the very real truth that not one single action on the part of the United States government or its citizenry has been done to repair any of the wrongs the entire world knows has been committed against Black people in this country precisely because it hasn’t been a topic we as Americans discussed in polite society. Let us commit to change that here today.
